Frequently Asked Questions
As someone who had to practice incredibly hard to get where I am today, I know the importance of a good cello teacher! I’ve taken everything I've learned over the years and combined it into an approach that is powerful, fun, and effective. Here are some of the questions people generally ask when they start taking lessons with me.
How did you get started playing cello?
I got started playing cello in middle school when I became enchanted with the deep tones and wide range of the instrument. I had always loved music as a kid and had received training in both piano and classical guitar, but it never felt like my "thing." There came a point when I remember falling in love with string instruments. I told my parents I HAD to learn the cello, "pretty please!" Something about it seemed so magical. At 11 years old, I picked up the instrument for the first time -- and I haven't been able to put it down since!
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In the first lesson, I always like to discuss the student's goals and see where they'd like to go with the cello. One person might want to go the classical route and train to study music in college (woohoo!), while another person may have different goals as an adult learner or hobbyist. After we determine what your goals and ambitions are, we can tailor future lessons to meet your unique goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
- Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance from Utah Valley University (where I studied under the direction of Dr. Cheung Chau and Walter Haman) - Pedagogy training in the Suzuki, Kodaly, Rolland, and Galamian string education methods - More than 10 years of performance experience - Professional and advanced music training at the University of Utah - Over 6 years of teaching experience!
What ages of students have you worked with?
I've worked with children as young as 5 years old, and adults up to 85 years old! No matter what your age, gender, or musical background is, I am confident in my abilities to help you learn the cello.
Is there anything parents & students should know before joining your studio?
Our studio is competitive and goal-oriented!
My students participate in annual competitions with the Utah Federation of Music Clubs, playing solos and competing for top scores in their divisions. We hold regular masterclasses and studio recitals, where students are asked to perform pieces for a group of their peers. Many of my students are members of local youth or community orchestras, in addition to their private lessons, and practice for several hours each day.

My goal as a studio owner is to train top-notch musicians and inspire community members. I also hope to help students become lifelong learners... and lifelong lovers of music. :)
